Emotion-focused Coping . Emotion-focused coping is a type of stress management that attempts to reduce negative emotional responses associated with stress. Lazarus and Folkman (1984) regarded this tendency (which they termed positive reappraisal) as a type of emotion- focused coping: coping aimed at managing distress emotions rather than at dealing with the stressor per se. Clearly, however, the value of this tendency is not limited to reduction of distress. Abstract. When talking about stress, these skills are known as coping mechanisms. Lazarus and Folkman coined the concept of cognitive appraisal and reappraisal.
